Yipeee – our favourite show is coming to town again, The Midcentury show at Lord Cricket Ground on Sunday the 27th May. It’s in its second year and is the sister show to the fabulous Midcentury Modern held at Dulwich College. Retropolitan will be there & showing some of our very best wares – expect some really special, unique statement pieces
This is what the organisers are saying, hot off the press:
“Not only do we regularly showcase the dealer who supplied the brilliant Scorsese film HUGO with props for the station, with TITANIC very much in our minds at the moment, Midcentury at Lords coincides with the arrival of a haul of vintage Italian furniture with a Danish influence c.1951, directly salvaged from an ocean liner. Trinity Maritime has sourced 850 pieces of timeless furniture and chairs from the ship and has chosen our show as the place to show it off.
The Midcentury Show returns for a second time to the spiritual home of cricket for what is to become a biannual affair which showcases the best mid-century dealers bang in the heart of St John’s Wood. Enjoy walking around and chatting to 50 top dealers selling design classics from the behemoths of design including Wegner, Eames, Jacobsen, Nelson and Day. The prime Scandinavian, American and European 30s to 80s furniture and homeware will get collectors and midcentury fans scrabbling for their cheque books. Previous attendees include Mary ‘queen of shops’ Portas and the man who created both Wallpaper and Monocle Mr Tyler Brule. Last year’s hits were quirky pieces like polished American chrome traffic lights, cigarette machines, an antique maternity table and a polished chrome children’s car. This year we have so much more in store for you, we can’t wait to go shopping ourselves.
The perfect spot for interior designers, developers and architects to source stand out pieces for their buildings, the midcentury show is also tgives everyone immediate access to some great pieces for the home that will never lose their value. There is no other show quite like this one.
Lords’ Midcentury show overlooks the stunning Stirling Prize winner of a raised pod, the Media Centre designed by Future Systems, which, for all the architectural trainspotters out there, was the first aluminium, semi-monocoque building in the world built and fitted-out in two boatyards using boat-building technology. You can also take in a view of the Mound Stand, designed by Sir Michael Hopkins and the Grandstand by Nicholas Grimshaw.
